James Alan Bernhardt of Yulan, NY, retired chef, passed away on Sunday, March 11.

Jim was the son of Nettie Bolson of Spring Valley and Hellmuth Bernhardt, originally of Golma, Germany.

Jim’s mother and stepfather Vinton Davis were former owners of Vinton’s Restaurant in Shohola, PA and Florida.

He began his long career in the restaurant business prepping salads while standing on a milk crate at Vinton’s. Jim also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting, as well as sharing time and stories with family and friends.

He was retired from the Main Street Café in Narrowsburg, NY and previously from the Eldred Preserve in Eldred, NY. Many will remember him from Baker’s Tap Room II in Barryville, NY, which he (on an ad hoc basis) helped his long-time friend, Shane Pearson, to open.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 32 years, Barbara Frank Bernhardt; son James Frank Bernhardt of Renssalaer, NY; daughter Anna Lynne Bernhardt of Yulan; grandson Joseph James Bernhardt; sisters Susan Zimmerman and husband Geoff of Scottsdale, AZ and, Nancy Estes and husband Mark of Lake Wales, FL; brother Joey V. Davis; numerous nieces and nephews; and the many friends, who will remember him as “the go-to guy.”

Following cremation, a memorial was held on Wednesday, March 14, at the Harrison-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville, NY.
