Dr. Stephen Michael Levin of Upper Grandview, NY and Barryville, NY, died from cancer on Tuesday, February 8, 2012 at his home in Upper Grandview. He was 70.

From 1987 to 2006, Dr. Levin was a co-director of the Irving J. Selikoff Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC. He played a leading role in bringing attention to the medical needs of thousands of firefighters, police officers and other rescue workers who suffered from respiratory ailments and other complaints following the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11. He successfully championed other environmental safety issues for workers, such as ensuring bridge workers in New York State were protected from lead poisoning by requiring the provision of respirators and vacuum hoses at work sites.

Dr. Levin was born in Philadelphia on October 16, 1941, to Sam and Sarah Levin. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1963 and received his medical degree from New York University four years later. He spent several years as a general practitioner in Pottstown, PA, before joining the Selikoff Center in 1979.

Dr. Levin is survived by his wife Robin; his mother Sarah Schurr; sister Ginny Jarvis; sons Jonathan, David and Joseph; and daughter Kate Levin.
