Catherine A. Ward Bortner, a long-time resident of Shohola, PA, passed away January 25th at the Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey after a short severe illness. She would have turned 64 on January 29.

Catherine grew up in Port Huron, MI.

She graduated from Pratt Institute with a BA in Fashion Design. Following a 15-year career in the fashion industry in NYC and after her marriage to Rolf Bortner in 1987, she relocated to Shohola. She taught at the Homestead School in Glen Spey, NY for three years.

Catherine earned a master’s degree in Graphic Design from Marywood College in 2009, and was currently teaching computer graphics at Sussex Community College in New Jersey. She was an active member in her community and of SGI-USA, the Buddhist Association for Peace, Culture & Education. Catherine was known for her generosity of spirit, endless energy and creativity.

She is survived by her husband; son Robert; her father Dr. John A. Ward of Port Huron; sister Margaret Ward Kircher and husband Bob; brothers Jack Ward and wife Mary, Christopher Ward and wife Cheryl, Tom Ward and wife Karen, Mike Ward and wife Angie and Pat Ward and wife Beth; and brother- in-law Bret Bortner.

Catherine is predeceased by her mother, Marjorie Dunn Ward; and a brother, Paul Ward.

The family would like to acknowledge the Morristown Medical Center ICU for their tireless efforts to save Catherine. Cremation took place January 30th. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
