Wallkill man arrested for robbery

On August 31, 2016 at approximately 9:35 PM, State Police responded to a report of a shooting on Greenway Terrace in the Scotchtown section of the Town of Wallkill. Through the investigation, troopers learned that a group of five people were approached by two black males wearing hooded sweatshirts.

The two males produced handguns, and proceeded to rob the five victims. During the robbery, one victim, Myles Morales, age 19, of Middletown, was shot four times. He has been hospitalized since the attack. The perpetrators left the area in a gray passenger car.

The investigation developed Jaylin K. Smith, age 18, of Newburgh, New York as one of the perpetrators of this crime. Smith was arrested on Friday evening, October 14th during a traffic stop on Route 9 in the Town of Wappinger. He was charged with one count each of Robbery in the First Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree.

Smith possessed 47 small bags of heroin on his person at the time of the arrest. He was arraigned before Town of Wallkill Judge Patrick S. Owen and committed to Orange County Jail without bail pending a future court appearance.

State Police were assisted in the investigation by the City of Beacon Police Department, the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department, and New York State Police Troop K in Wappinger. The investigation into the shooting is continuing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call State Police in Middletown at 845-344-5300.
