District Attorney Jim Farrell announced that Matthew Miller, aka “Kruddy”, 22, of Monticello, N.Y. was sentenced today in Sullivan County Court to 8 years in state prison and 3 years of post-release supervision for his participation in a January 7, 2016 robbery and his January 6, 2016 sale of heroin in the Village of Monticello.

Farrell said that Miller pled guilty in April to Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree, a class B felony, and Robbery in the 2nd Degree, a class C violent felony. At the time of his plea, Farrell said that Miller admitted to selling heroin to another person on January 6, 2016, and participating in a subsequent robbery of that person, together with four other men, on January 7, 2016, all within the Shaker Heights housing complex in the Village of Monticello.

The victim of the robbery arrived at the housing complex on January 7, 2016, to meet with Miller, who lured the victim to a dark area, where the victim was robbed of items including cash and a cellular telephone by Miller and other individuals.

Miller was subsequently located by police in a vehicle containing other alleged participants in the robbery. Miller was arrested on these charges following a joint investigation conducted by the Village of Monticello Police, the Village of Liberty Police, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Police.

Executive Assistant District Attorney Meagan Galligan recommended that Miller be sentenced to 10 years in prison, the maximum available sentence under the plea agreement; Miller’s attorney asked the Court to sentence him to the minimum under the agreement, 5 years in prison. County Court Judge Frank LaBuda ultimately imposed the 8-year sentence.

Farrell said, “This case was put together by a terrific combination of various police agencies that worked together to investigate these crimes and ultimately bring this defendant to justice. This case underscores my office’s commitment to holding violent felons to account. This defendant not only distributed heroin into our community, but perpetrated, together with others, a violent robbery during which the victim was threatened with what appeared to be a gun. Miller now has to answer for these crimes by spending the next 8 years in state prison.”
