On Monday October 12, 2015, at approximately 9:49 PM, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Patrol responded to a 911 call reporting a person shot at 177 Cohen and Cohen, in the Swan Lake section of the Town of Bethel.
Upon arriving at the location deputies found Michael Northcote, age 34, dead at the scene. Northcote did reside at that address. An autopsy, supervised by Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kestin, revealed that Northcote’s death was a homicide as a result of gunfire. Because the investigation is still active, the Sheriff’s Office is unable to release any specific details regarding this incident.
Although the investigation tends to indicate that this was not a random incident, residents are still encouraged to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activity immediately by calling 911.
The Sheriff’s Office is working on the investigation in conjunction with the New York State Police BCI, Troop F Forensic Identification Unit, the FBI Safe Streets Taskforce and the District Attorney’s Office. Additional assistance has been provided by the Village of Monticello Police, the Village of Liberty Police and the Sullivan County Bureau of Emergency Management.
