Monticello man arrested after foot pursuit

On Friday August 28th, 2015 the Village of Liberty Police Department arrested Matthew Whitley, 34 of Monticello NY after a vehicle stop on Buckley Street in the Village of Liberty.

Two officers working a dedicated STOP DWI roving patrol stopped Whitley’s vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign. During the traffic stop Whitley fled on foot and was pursued by officers. While running away Whitley threw a quantity of marihuana which was later recovered by officers. Whitley was apprehended by pursuing officers a short distance away.

Further investigation revealed that Whitley had been operating the vehicle while his ability was impaired by a combination of alcohol and drugs. Officers also located approximately 4.8 grams of crack cocaine packaged for sale on his person.

Whitley was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, tampering with physical evidence, all felonies, resisting arrest and DWAI combined alcohol and drugs, misdemeanors and unlawful possession of marihuana, a violation as well as several vehicle and traffic law tickets. Whitley was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and remanded to Sullivan County Jail without bail.
