Monticello Police arrested Linda Popper (26) of Monticello on March 14. Popper was charged with misdemeanors for obstructing firefighting operations and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

At 7:55 PM Friday the Monticello Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 27-cottage street in the Village of Monticello. Upon arrival of firefighters smoke was observed coming from apartment #1 of the building. Monticello professional firefighter Carl Houman forced entry into the apartment and observed that the kitchen stove was fire.

Popper was also observed lying on a couch. Houman attempted to awake popper and render aid to her. Popper did not respond so Houman placed her on his shoulder and began to take her outside the building and away from the immediate danger. Popper regained consciousness and immediately began fighting with Houman.

Houman identified himself multiple times but popper continued fighting. Monticello police officers arrived on scene and attempted to interview and calm popper who continued to be verbally abusive to firefighters and police officers.

Popper was also observed to be in an intoxicated condition. Popper was then arrested for obstructing firefighters. Popper was additionally charged with possessing a “crack pipe” that was observed laying in plain view inside her apartment. Popper was arraigned before Village of Monticello justice Josephine Finn and released on $100.00 bail pending further court action.
