Rape suspect killed near Rio Reservoir

A rape suspect who police had been searching for on October 10, was shot to death on October 11th by a neighbor on Old Plank Road at a cabin where the suspect was staying.

Norris Acosta-Sanchez, 35, had been on the run from police in Ramapo since July when he was accused of raping an under-aged girl. He was not using a cell phone and had changed his appearance, but police in Deerpark found him living in the cabin on Plank Road.

Initially he gave police a false name, but later they were able to verify his identity. A tactical team from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office went to pick him up, but he was staying in a make-shift shelter a distance from the cabin and ran off when he saw officers arriving.

He was able to evade capture on Thursday by jumping into the Rio Reservoir and swimming across it and then disappearing into the woods in Lumberland. Multiple teams of officers searched for him until dark when the search was called off.

The next morning his neighbor shot and killed him, and then the neighbor called police, but the other details of the shooting have not been made public.

NY State Police release a statement on Friday afternoon which said "The State Police in Middletown are currently investigating the shooting death of a 35 year-old male which occurred at approximately 9:20 this morning on Old Plank Road in the Town of Deerpark. Police are questioning the 42 year-old male suspect and a criminal investigation is ongoing."

The identity of the victim is being withheld until notification of the victim's next of kin can be made. Further information will be released pending the outcome of the investigation.

The alleged rape of the 15-year-old girl was reported to police by the girl’s parents back in July, and Acosta-Sanchez, who was unemployed, was indicted by a grand jury in Rockland County on multiple counts of rape and related charges.
