TV stolen to buy crack in Monticello

Posted

On Thursday September 12, 2013 at approximately 4:55 PM, Corporal Blake Starner of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Patrol was returning to his station via Broadway in Monticello, when he saw a suspicious male subject with a flat screen TV walking in the rain in front of Kristt Company.

When the Corporal approached, the man threw the TV and took off on foot. Starner called for backup and chased the subject to the rear parking lot of the Nugget Tavern. Sgt Riegler of the Monticello Police Department responded to the scene and helped Starner subdue the subject.

A subsequent investigation by the Sheriff's Office and Monticello Police revealed that the suspect had entered a residence at 47 Hammond Street in the Village and stole the TV. The suspect, Michael Engelmann, 26 of Monticello, later admitted to police that he intended to sell the TV for crack cocaine.

Englemann was charged with burglary, petit larceny, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. He was arraigned before Judge Martin Miller and sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $30,000 bail. Englemann is due back in Monticello Court on Friday September 13, 2103 at 10:00 AM.
