Monticello man arrested for welfare fraud

Posted

Monticello police in conjunction with the Sullivan County Welfare Fraud unit arrested Ronald Herbert (51) of Monticello on Friday 5/3/13.

Herbert was charged with a felony for offering a false instrument for filing in the 1st degree and welfare fraud in the 5th degree.

An investigation by Monticello Police and the Sullivan county welfare unit revealed that Herbert was engaged in a woodcutting and scrap metal business in a lot on route 17b in the village of Monticello.

Herbert had intentionally defrauded the Sullivan County Department of Family Services by filing a false application for public benefits.

Herbert failed to report the income he was receiving while he was operating the business and receiving public assistance benefits at the same time.

Herbert was arraigned before acting village of Monticello justice Martin Miller and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail pending further court action. Herbert is currently on parole in NY State until 8/24/15 for a prior conviction of grand larceny.
