Heroin bust in Monticello

The Sheriff’s Office has made another arrest in its ongoing investigation of drug trafficking in Sullivan County. On Thursday January 10, 2013 at approximately 2:45 PM, Deputy Jessie Cramer spotted a White Ford Windstar minivan near the intersection of Anawana Lake Road and State Route 42 in the Town of Thompson.

The driver, 34 year old Angel Mulero of Monticello, was wanted by the Sheriff’s Gang Intelligence Unit in connection with heroin sales in the Monticello area. Mulero was taken into custody without incident and charged with 2 counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the 3rd degree, a class B Felony.

Sheriff Mike Schiff described the suspect as one of the main players in the local drug trade. “It is possible that Mr. Mulero may have been trying to fill the void left by our last big heroin bust a few weeks ago”, said the Sheriff.

While many heroin dealers have stopped stamping brand names on their product to avoid being linked to a possible death caused by an overdose, Mulero’s packages of heroin were allegedly stamped with the names “Heavy Hitter” and “Melaza”.

Melaza, which means “molasses” in Spanish, is also slang for “awsome” or “sweet”. Angel Mulero was arraigned before Town of Thompson Judge Martin Miller and sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, pending a future court appearance.
