Copper thieves arrested in Sullivan

The New York State Police announce the arrest of four individuals from Spring Valley, NY. JASON SANDOVAL, age 22, NOE MONROY-LEMUS, age 18, LENIN CHICAIZA, age 18 and a sixteen year old male were arrested for the felony charge of attempted burglary in the third degree and the misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass in the third degree, possession of burglar’s tools and resisting arrest. SANDOVAL and the sixteen year old were additionally charged with a burglary that occurred in September at the Homowack Resort in Phillipsport, NY.

This arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation by the State Police in Wurtsboro and Ellenville involving the theft of copper piping from several seasonal properties near the Sullivan and Ulster County line. The suspects were observed by an Ellenville Trooper preparing to enter a building on the Homowack property at which time three of the four suspects fled into a wooded area. Additional State Police and Ulster County Sheriff’s units, including K9 units from the State Police and NY State DEC, responded to assist with the search and apprehension of the suspects.

The defendants were processed at the State Police barracks in Wurtsboro. They were arraigned by Town of Mamakating Town Justice Marcelle Matthews and committed to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or bond, to reappear on October 25, 2012 in the Mamakating Justice Court.
