Liberty man arrested for failing to register as sex offender

On Wednesday December 28, 2011 the Village of Liberty Police Department arrested Mathew Smith, 25 of Liberty, on charges he violated conditions of the Sex Offender Registration Act. Smith, a level one sex offender, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Fallsburg with the assistance of the Fallsburg Police Department.

Per the Sex Offender Registration Act all level one and two sex offenders are required to provide an updated photograph to local law enforcement and the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services every three years. Smith failed to meet this requirement, and could not be located by Village of Liberty Police for over a week.

Smith is charged with failing to register and verify, a felony in violation of New York State Corrections Law. Smith is being held at the Village of Liberty Police Department pending arraignment.
