Seniors teach second-graders about health

MONTICELLO, NY — The second-grade classes at George L. Cooke Elementary School recently had the opportunity to have four Monticello High School seniors come and teach them about nutrition and staying active, coinciding with the Common Core “Domain of the Human Body” that the second graders are studying. The high school seniors planned the lessons ahead of time with their health teacher, Ms. Alvarez, and the Athletics Director, Mr. Ryan. On the first day, the lessons included activities for the students to know the nutritious food groups and how to divide your plate to eat the proper portion sizes of each food group. On the second day, the lessons were activities based on being active. The seniors showed the students that organized sports are not the only way the students can be active. They could be active playing tag, riding their bikes, or even dancing. Pictured in the back row are high school seniors Rafael Ortiz, Christiana (Christy) Poli, Brianna Bennett, Devin Williams, and their teachers Ms. Alvarez and Mr. Ryan, and elementary school students Raquel Camacho Ampuero, Justin Bonilla Paredes, Quentin DiPippo, Kaiyla Morrison,Traven Davi and Maya Fernandez.
