NARROWSBURG, NY — Local author Michael Lewis, PhD, will sign copies of his new book, “The Rise of Consciousness and the Development of Emotional Life,” on Saturday, August 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Delaware Arts Center, 37 Main St.
Dr. Lewis is director of the Institute for the Study of Child Development at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where he is a distinguished professor of pediatrics and psychiatry. He is also professor of psychology, education, nursing, and biomedical engineering at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and serves on the executive committee of its Cognitive Science Center.
In his book, Lewis explores our emotional lives from childhood through the development of self-conscious emotions such as empathy, envy and embarrassment, and later, shame, guilt and pride. He examines the influence of parents on children’s emotional lives, the place lying and deception play in emotional life, what happens when emotional development goes awry, how the two sexes differ emotionally and more.
Lewis has published hundreds of journal articles and dozens of books, including “Social Cognition and the Acquisition of Self, Children’s Emotions and Moods,” “Shame: The Exposed Self,” and “Altering Fate.”
