Cooke students learn about rare musical instruments
MONTICELLO, NY — Two talented women from Simple Gifts Music recently visited students at George L. Cooke Elementary School. Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon play an array of instruments that some students never have seen before. Some of the instruments were called the banjolin, a bowed psaltery, the hammered dulcimer, and they played a few others as well. They also played music with the instruments from a variety of ethnic folk songs.
The students were mesmerized when Hirshon showed the students how to play the spoons and when Littleton taught the students how to make the limberjack dance. A limberjack is a hand carved wooden doll from early folk art. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts sponsored the educational show.
