HAWLEY, PA — The fourth annual D&H Canal Festival will be held Saturday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Delaware & Hudson’s Canal Park at Lock 31 on Route 6, one mile west of The Settlers’ Inn. The park is a 16-acre setting on the banks of the Lackawaxen River.

This free event will feature live traditional music; blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, quilting, and plein-air painting demonstrations; Civil War encampment with a rifle firing at 3:30 p.m.; guided history and nature tours; children’s activities with an archaeology “dig” by PA Archaeology Society members; and nonprofit informational booths.

Dave Matsinko is back by popular demand. This retired Lehighton Area School District teacher has an ability to mix music and history in his own unique way and will play traditional American folk music on various instruments on stage at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. At other times, he will perform as a strolling minstrel.

New during this year’s festival are guided walks at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. titled “Top 10 Myths of the Forest.” It is an easy-paced 45-minute walk through the woods on the canal park’s Riverside Trail with consulting forester Paul Kowalczyk.

Food, including home-baked goods, will be available for purchase, along with local history-related items in the Canal Store, and carriage rides on the towpath. Five authors will be signing and selling their books, and juried commercial vendors will be selling their wares.

New this year is a Living History Stage on which a canal boat captain, Native American and musician will perform two programs each from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
