HAWLEY, PA —The Wayne County Historical Society will hold its annual Storytelling Dinner at The Settlers Inn on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26 at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $65 per person, which includes traditional storytelling, harvest season dinner and artfully carved pumpkins. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Wayne County Historical Society’s restoration of Delaware & Hudson Lock 31 Canal Park.

The feast begins with spiced nuts, butternut squash soup, cranberry walnut salad with cider dressing, and warm goat cheese in phyllo with apple pepper jam. Entrées include chicken breast stuffed with apples, onions, and cheddar with mini potato gratin and apple cider sauce; lemon roast salmon with pear ginger chutney and brown basmati rice; or garlic marinated skirt steak with sweet potato hash and crispy onions. Featured desserts are pumpkin ale pudding, chocolate mousse cake and apple cinnamon crisp.

Then, storyteller Richard Pawling will portray Pennsylvania German Canal Captain John Hummel. Captain Hummell (Cappy) will “take you for a ride” on the D &H Canal from his boatman’s shanty, highlighted by visualizations of life on the canal. Using accurate stories of canal life and playing his guitar and mandolin, Cappy will tie together the Industrial Revolution components of coal, logging, and iron industries, with railroad and canal themes that contributed to the very existence of the town of Hawley.
