The Columns to exhibit goblet

MILFORD, PA — The Pike County Historical Society’s Columns Museum will host a special exhibit in honor of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s visit to Pike County. A replica of the gifted goblet to the President and thank you letter from the First Lady will be on display at the museum from September 18 through October 20.

Museum hours are Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and admission to The Columns museum costs $5 per person.

The famed Kennedy Goblet was a gift presented to the First Family on behalf of Pike and Wayne counties. It was intended to be given to President Kennedy the day he came to Pike County to dedicate the Pinchot Institute for Conservation, 50 years ago this month; however the Secret Service would not allow any gifts to be given the day of the visit for security reasons. But Pike County Historical Society advocate Norman Lehde was informed that at a later date, the White House would receive the gift.

The PCHS received a thank you letter from the First Lady just a few days after the visit, and it was received the day before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. The letter is likely one of the last written by the First Lady while in the White House. Call 570/296-8126.
