SPARTA, NJ — The Northeast PA Audubon Society will sponsor a raptor migration watch at Sunrise Mountain on Saturday, September 15.
Every year, hundreds of broad-wing hawks begin their journey south to Central and South America. The timing of this migration is critical for the many juvenile birds that were just fledglings less then a month before, and who haven’t been engaged in sustained daily flight for more then 20 or 30 minutes since fledging.
In 2010, as many as 400 birds were counted in just 20 minutes. The best time for observation is generally between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Bring a lunch and wear good hiking boots to walk the last few hundred yards to the top of the mountain from the car park. Call 570/253-2364 for time and meeting place.
