Ragtime master to perform

HAWLEY and MILFORD, PA — Pianist Masanobu “Mas” Ikemiya, a master of ragtime, will perform two concerts of ragtime and ragtime-related classical music in August. On Friday, August 17, he will play at the Hawley Silk Mill, and on Saturday, August 18, he will appear at the Milford Theatre—itself a gift from the early jazz age. Both events are at 7:30 p.m.

Ikemiya’s program includes ragtime favorites like Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer,” and music by classical composers who gravitated toward early jazz, such as Claude Debussy’s “Golliwogg’s Cakewalk,” New Orleans native Louis Marie Gottschalk’s “Banjo (Grotesque American Fantasie),” and George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Ikemiya is a featured artist at the annual Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival and Michigan Ragtime Festival. He has performed his “Classics to Ragtime” program at New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Tickets cost $20 at the door or $15 when purchased in advance on Kindred Spirits’ website, www.kindredspiritsprograms.org, or at Books & Prints at Pear Alley (570/296-4777) in Milford. Children under 15 are admitted free.
