WCM kicks off the season on April Fools

HORTONVILLE, NY — The Weekend of Chamber Music will celebrate April Fools Day with “Fools & Fiddlers,” a concert at Hortonville Presbyterian Church on Hankins Road at 3 p.m. The concert begins WCM’s 19th season in Sullivan County, and is followed by a meet-the-artists reception.

Harpsichordist, Baroque specialist and founder of American virtuosi Kenneth Hamrick performs with flutist Judith Pearce and violinist Nurit Pacht at the church. Among their pieces is the first modern performance in the U.S. of an unpublished 18th-century work, the Trio in D Major by Georg Philipp Telemann. Also on the program are selections from Rameau’s Pièces de Clavecin, and works by Dario Castello and Antonio Vivaldi.

The Telemann Trio was acquired by Pearce through Gisela Baethge of Germany, who plays viola da gamba and is a close friend. The autograph of the Trio languished in the Landesbibiothek in Darmstadt, Germany until the noted botanist Hans-Jürgen Beug uncovered it in the 1960s when he was at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim, and then gave a copy to Baethge.

Pearce is recognized on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the most distinctive flutists of her generation, and her long career encompasses collaborations with some of this era’s most notable and colorful musicians, from Simon Rattle, Peter Maxwell Davies and Kathleen Battle to Cleo Laine and Eartha Kitt.

Pacht has won top prizes in international competitions in Europe and the United States, including the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition in Switzerland, and subsequently performed in the world’s most prestigious venues from The People’s Hall of China and Carnegie Hall to Moscow’s Great Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center.

Hamrick has been a featured player and received top prizes at major festivals and competitions in the United States and Europe. He has performed, toured and recorded with soloists and ensembles from the New York Philharmonic to the Metropolitan Opera to Savion Glover. Hamrick is a National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities Fellow, and holds a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music.

Tickets cost $20, and are free for students 18 and under. Email info@WCMconcerts.org or call 845/832-8527.
