GLEN SPEY, NY — Eagle Scout candidate Brian Hazen, left, and his grandmother, Kathy Bisland, who is chairman of the Lumberland Parks and Recreation Committee, presented their town board with the Sullivan Renaissance (SR) Award they received for Best Garden Design, Category C, Excellence in Garden Design and Sustainability at the town board meeting on August 11.

Category C projects are those with multiple locations that incorporate beautification as part of a long-term community-wide strategy. The town will receive $1,000 for the award. Bisland thanked the board for its support of the projects, for which the town received approximately $7,500. Bisland reported that the committee created a ball field, a nature trail and picnic area in Pond Eddy. It also resurfaced a basketball court there. Circle Park now has a basketball court, mini golf and an outdoor movie theater where family movies are shown monthly. All six town entrances were weeded, planted, mulched and watered by dedicated volunteers. Bisland estimated the value of all donations and in-kind services accomplished in the town this year as approximately $200,000. She then deferred to her grandson, who thanked all who helped with his highly applauded Veterans Memorial project near the Town Hall, from planning to execution. Several Lumberland youth were also awarded scholarships by SR, including Lauren Hazen, Meaghan Hazen and Patrick Reiser.
