DEP announces public meeting, hearing on Susquehanna County compressor station

Agency will discuss Williams Energy’s air quality plan approval application

WILKES-BARRE -- The Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public meeting and hearing on Tuesday, Aug. 28, to discuss Williams Energy’s proposed Air Quality plan approval to construct the Central compressor station in Bridgewater and Brooklyn townships, Susquehanna County.

The 6 p.m. meeting and hearing will be at Montrose High School at 15 Meteor Way.  Read more

An absent-minded professor

At a recent meeting of the “Bamboo Gang,” Roger Menard showed off a pretty rod that had a very curious history. As Roger explained it, while fishing he had met a fellow angler whose father had worked for Jim Payne. This fellow noticed Roger’s bamboo rod and asked if Roger had ever put rods together. When Roger answered “yes,” this fellow said he would send him some glued-up sticks for a seven-and-one-half-foot rod. These sticks would already have the ferrules attached.  Read more

Sporting licenses on sale

NEW YORK STATE —Freshwater fishing, hunting and trapping licenses for the 2012-13 season will go on sale on Monday, August 13. You can purchase licenses online, by phone or in person at DEC offices and most sporting goods stores and town clerk offices. The 2012-13 licenses are valid from October 1, 2012 through September 30, 2013. If you plan to fish, hunt or trap prior to October 1, 2012, you must have a valid 2011-12 license. Visit


John J. Tenbus of Narrowsburg,, NY, a lifelong resident of the area, passed away Monday, August 6, 2012 at Oakwood Terrace, Moosic, PA . He was 84.
John Tenbus was born in Honesdale, Pa. on August 24, 1927, the son of the late Lawrence Joseph and Mary Catherine .Connor. John was married to the late Luella A. “Corky” Dexter Tenbus for 56 years. She passed away on February 24, 2007.  Read more

Canaries in a mine, frogs in a pond

Years ago, miners entered a mine to work, and sometimes they were accompanied by a canary in a cage. The idea of the canary was that if there was a low oxygen level or hazardous gas present, the canary would show signs of distress before the miners did; this gave the miners time to evacuate. Thankfully, modern innovations like portable gas meters and self-contained breathing apparatus have eliminated the need to sacrifice any more canaries. The job description of a canary, had it been listed by the mining company, would probably read “bio-indicator.”  Read more

Mazfest: Peace, love and music in Roscoe

ROSCOE, NY — What began as a small, one-day music festival has grown into a mini Woodstock-esque event hosted by the Livingston Manor-based rock group Mazmyth. In explaining the name of his band, guitarist Matt Smith said, “Matt Smith sounds like Mazmyth when you’re slurring your words. It had us laughing and it just stuck around.” And from there sprang the name for the entire music festival, Mazfest.  Read more
